How Do I Stand Up for My Life?

Find the Courage to Say No, Even Under Pressure

You want to be accepted, to fit in with your friends. But what if the cost of fitting in is too high?

It isn't always easy to fit in or to say no. No one wants to feel uncool or unpopular. But what do you do when you are at a party or hanging out and you're feeling the pressure to do something you don't want to do? How do you find the courage to say no? Here are some tips for beating the pressure:

  1. If you feel pressured, walk away like you have to do something. This will provide a distraction.
  2. Stick close to someone you know who isn't into drugs or alcohol. It's much easier to say no when you have a little support.
  3. Think ahead. If you know that an upcoming party may test your will power, think of a plan to avoid the situation.
  4. Know the enemy. There are plenty of websites that have graphic pictures and explanations of what alcohol and drugs really do to you. Having a look may provide all of the inspiration you need to refuse.
  5. Use other words for NO. Some people never take no for an answer, so change the words without giving in. For example, "I'm not into that." "I don't think so." "I've got stuff to do tomorrow." Or even, "I'm getting a cold and I don't want to pass it around."
  6. Be the designated driver. People will be more likely to let you do your own thing if you have to drive them home.
  7. Practice building your confidence. Act out scenarios in your head before you have to face these situations in reality.

These are just a few suggestions. You can think of more strategies that fit you best. The most important thing you need to remember is: YOU are in control. Listen to your instincts. When something feels wrong, it usually is.
