Ecstasy

What You Should Know

Ecstasy is a designer drug made by illegal chemists. It comes in powder, tablets or capsules of different shapes and sizes. Ecstasy is made up of a mixture of drugs, including the synthetic drug MDMA. It's considered a hallucinogenic amphetamine. Known as the "hug drug" of the rave scene, it can make you feel empathetic and full of energy. It heightens emotions, positive and negative.

What's the Problem?

  • You can expect tingly skin, an increased heart rate, nervousness, uncertainty, dry mouth, blurred vision, sweating, and nausea — known as 'coming up'. Sometimes users clench their jaws while using and chew frenetically.
  • Dancing for long periods in a hot place such as a club increases the chance you'll overheat and/or dehydrate.
  • Taking Ecstasy may leave women susceptible to cystitis and thrush.
  • Guys report difficulties attaining an erection or orgasm while on Ecstasy.
  • You may feel depression, paranoia, anxiety and confusion. These effects on your brain and emotions may become permanent with chronic use.
  • Ecstasy raises your body temperature. This increase can sometimes cause organ damage or even death.
  • You might feel tired and depressed for days after using Ecstasy. You might start craving Ecstasy to feel good or regain the high.
